Dragonfly Day in the Meadow

Here is a young black saddlebags. Those yellow spots on the abdomen fade with age. I enjoyed reading all about them in the Wild Guide "Dragonflies" by Cynthia Berger.
This one I believe is a wandering glider. It has a yellow face.

The female widow skimmer was back again.

Beautiful Black-eyed Susans in the meadow.

Aside from the Monarch, the butterflies tend to be small now. This is one of the "witches", which I believe is a Little Glassywing.

As I told the residents of Abington, look at the clover in the meadow and you will see the eastern tailed blue. Here is a male.

First Monarch

Monarch and monarch egg on milkweed This beautiful female widow skimmer was seen in the meadow.

When they see the sun, the black-eyed Susans are popping out all over the meadow.

If you walk in the woods and you might see this lovely damselfly, ebony jewelwing.

Meadow on the first day of summer

Butterfly weed. We have had so much rain in June, that the black-eyed Susans are still mostly in bud, just waiting for the sun. The grass is soggy.
Cabbage white on heal-all - Because of all the rain and cool weather there are no butterflies to be seen. Are they waiting for the sun?

Deptford pink

A ladybug and an aphid

Common milkweed is coming into bloom, and the scent is lovely.

Meadow between the raindrops

Rabbits are always around.
A cold bumble bee which did not want to fly.

A wren singing from the top of a bird house.

This critter was on my elderberry. I have no idea what it is, but it is fantastic!

A Foulkeways trip to Graeme Park. Built in 1722, changed only once in the 1750's. The mansion is the only surviving residence of a colonial Pennsylvania governor.

Critters

To really see this elegant lace bug, click on it and make it larger. Beautiful!
There is now a bullfrog where I once saw the green frog. Did the bullfrog chase the other away or eat him?

Andulusia 2

The gardens at the Biddle estate, Andalusia

The second part of our trip was a visit to the Biddle estate at Andulusia. Photos were not permitted inside the house, but shown are the gardens.

Inside the house

On a trip from Foulkeways to Andulusia, the first stop was at the studio and home of Nelson Shanks. We were given a tour of the studio and then of his home, where photos were permitted, from which I have selected just a few to share with you. The studio is crowded and overwhelming. His home features art works that he has collected over the years, and is equally overwhelming!

This red mushroom was only an inch tall. Does anyone know what it is?

Seen by the side of Perimeter Road, near the "M" parking lot entrance.
