Monarch Migration

While we were in Cape May last week the monarch migration was in full force.
The Monarchs were everywhere, but especially on the tall sunflower Heliantheum giganteus.

Many on all the flowers.

Overnight they rested on the trees.

We watched them wake up in the morning to resume feeding, before they untook the 10 mile flight over the Delaware River.

It was magnificent!

Feeding the bees

Autumn means it is time to feed the bees. Bees need capped honey to make it through the winter. If the trays are heavy with honey the bees are not fed at this time.
If the trays are light, we place a feeder in the hive and fill it with sugar water.

Filling the feeder with sugar water.

The float keeps the bees from drowning when they come to drink.

Only two hives needed feeding, maybe our Bidens patch has kept some well fed.

By request

One of my followers requested a more inclusive view of the Bidens patch. This was the best I could do.
It is really best seen from in the middle.

There are 3 Monarchs in this photo.

Summer azure - That makes 23 species for September.

This Eupatorium is white snakeroot, I think.

Found this black swallowtail caterpillar today.

The asters in the middle meadow are beautiful. They come in pink, rose and purple.

Black or not

This black swallowtail was not very eager to pose for a photo, so when it flew off I went dashing after it and to my surprise the next black butterfly I photographed was not the same one.
Spicebush swallowtail - I now have seen 22 species this month at Foulkeways.

I saw this great spreadwing damselfly eating breakfast in my garden.

And Monarchs by the bushelful!
