Bird walk

Ruth Pfeffer leads a bird walk in memory of Ruth Zumeta.
Ruth leading on th Maris Trail.
We saw a bluebird, and Ruth identfied and heard many other birds.

Sakes Alive! Snakes!

This tangle looks like three garter snakes in the rocks.  I can see three tails.
Here are two, but you can see one head.  Garter snakes are good for the ecology by keeping pesky voles in check.
This is a rattlesnake weed, which is really a lovely flower of the woodlands, related to hawkweed.

Out Today

How do you know when something is about to happen?  They bring in the construction module and porta-potty.  Work is beginning on the old post office, which will become a Foulkeways residence.
There was a truck and a man with a machine, which was converting those tree rounds into firewood in the picnic woods.

A sign in Spanish to say do not cut this grass.  This is an area which is now no-mow, or rather once a year mown lawn.
Finally!  I saw a bluebird on the box in the meadow.
Our lovely Japanese garden.

Pretty blossoms

Look for this orange azelea in the tunnel near A.
Near this lovely Carolina Silverbell tree.

This lovely pink dogwood is in the F courtyard.

While I was out with the camera, someone told me I must not miss the new housing at F-10, put there by Mrs. Robin.

Moving On

A light has been installed for the Foulkeways sign that was moved.
The tree care folks were here to remove dead and hazardous trees in the picnic area.
The white tubes are where the new native trees have been planted.
Tree rounds.
Pumping water out of the to be created wetlands area.  The water is being removed so that the soil additive can be put in before the planting begins.

Hidden gems

Between Central and the fitness center, aroud the parking lot, you can find some gems at this time of year.
This fothergilla is located just outside the door from Abington to Fitness.
This dogwood is up the ramp beyond the loading platform.  It appears to have once been a tree, but is now growing as an abudant flowering shrub.

Tucked in behind the dogwood is this holly, which is also now a shrub.
And last of all, what I had been searching for!  A golden chain tree.  But it is no longer a tree, but also growing as a shrub.
The flowers are lovely golden chains.

Honey Lovers Unite!

We had a campaign by the dandelion haters which resulted in spraying our lawns (and more) with weed killer.  This year they sprayed the area around the wildflower meadow, and even a foot or so of the meadow.  This has left our bees without food at a critical time for the making of honey.  I also hate to think of the butterflies and other insects which will be hurt by this.  How about  not spraying on that side of the road near the wildflower meadow?

The more.  Again the spray drifted (?) into my garden and left three columbines out of four with twisted and gnarled leaves.

Foulkeways goes to Van Gogh

Today Foulkeways took two buses to visit the Van Gogh exhibit at the Art Museum.  There were over 40 of us.  No photos were allowed in the exhibit.
Here he is behind the railing on the 2nd floor.
Here are the sunflowers that  greet you first  in the exhibit.  This photo came from the internet.
And the sheaves of wheat is also from the internet.
